Author
Deonne Parker has described so well the Lowcountry of South Carolina
so many of us love:
The
Lowcountry of South Carolina
The “lowcountry” lies along the coast of South Carolina, and includes
parts of North Carolina and Georgia. The low-lying Atlantic coastal
plains are characterized by rivers, streams, estuaries, deltas, salt
water marshes and barrier islands. Palmetto palm trees and live oak
trees draped in Spanish moss contribute to the compelling beauty of
the landscape. Its swamps and wetlands are home to an abundance of wildlife.
The lowcountry of South Carolina includes the ACE basin, a watery wilderness
at the confluence of the Ashepoo, Combahee and Edisto Rivers, which
covers a vast area along the coast between Beaufort and Charleston,
South Carolina. It is pristine, teeming with fish, shrimp and oysters.
Scientists call it the cradle of life.
